User Program

The BioPACIFIC MIP aims to leverage a strong tradition of creating, operating, and maintaining open-access facilities at UCLA-UCSB that enable transformative research. Envisaged as more than a suite of technical resources, BioPACIFIC MIP: (1) seeks to integrate internal, external, expert, and novice users alike into the mission of discovery of new bioderived materials, and (2) emphasizes intellectual capital, technique know-how, and collaborative spirit in connecting users to the tools and the researchers of the MIP.

Researchers interested in accessing BioPACIFIC MIP may do so by submitting a BioPACIFIC MIP User Proposal to initiate a research project or a sample/service/data request. 

What’s Included in Approved BioPACIFIC MIP Projects

•  Access to BPM Instruments – Approved users receive free access to all BioPACIFIC MIP instrumentation, enabling them to leverage state-of-the-art tools for their research.
•  Support from BPM Project Scientists – Users benefit from the expertise of BioPACIFIC MIP project scientists, who provide guidance on experimental design, data analysis, and best practices.
•  Standard Laboratory Supplies – General consumables necessary for experiments are provided at no cost, ensuring smooth workflow without additional financial burden.
•  Training and Research Support – Hands-on instrument training and technical assistance are available to help users effectively utilize BioPACIFIC MIP facilities.
•  Travel Assistance for Non-R1 Institutions – Limited funding is available to help offset travel expenses for researchers coming from non-R1 institutions, making it easier to access BioPACIFIC MIP resources.

What’s Not Covered

•  Project-Specific Materials – Users are responsible for covering the cost of any unique materials required for their research that go beyond standard lab supplies. Materials may be shipped to BioPACIFIC MIP or purchased by BioPACIFIC MIP and billed to the user at cost plus overhead.
•  External Contractor Services – Fees associated with outsourced services, such as DNA synthesis, external sample characterization, or fabrication, are not included and must be covered by the user.
•  Travel and Accommodation Expenses – Users are responsible for funding transportation and lodging. BioPACIFIC MIP can provide advice on local accommodations. Limited funding is available to help offset travel expenses for researchers coming from non-R1 institutions.
•  Additional Facility Access Fees – While BioPACIFIC MIP instruments are free to use, use of other shared facilities at UCSB or UCLA may incur additional costs. BioPACIFIC MIP will facilitate access to these facilities.
