Director Javier Read de Alaniz Named AAAS Fellow
One of four UC Santa Barbara faculty members honored in 2025
Our facility is proud to share that Director Javier Read de Alaniz has been elected a 2025 Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) — one of the most prestigious recognitions in the scientific community. He joins three other UC Santa Barbara faculty members honored this year: Kelly Caylor, Shelly Gable, and David Morrison.
Founded in 1848, AAAS recognizes scientists, engineers, and innovators whose contributions have significantly advanced their fields and helped translate discovery into societal impact. Election as an AAAS Fellow reflects not only scientific excellence but also leadership in advancing science for the public good.
Professor Read de Alaniz was recognized for his pioneering work in the design and synthesis of stimuli-responsive organic materials, particularly materials that reversibly change optical properties when exposed to visible light. His research draws inspiration from nature’s adaptive materials — such as plants and organisms that dynamically respond to environmental stimuli — to develop molecules capable of changing shape, color, and polarity in response to light.
By embedding these molecules into polymers and functional materials, his group enables systems that can bend, move, or switch properties under visible light and then return to their original state once the stimulus is removed. These innovations open new possibilities for smart materials, soft robotics, adaptive coatings, and energy-efficient optical technologies.
“Science is fundamentally a collective endeavor,” said Read de Alaniz. “I am deeply grateful to share this recognition with my co-workers and colleagues who have challenged, inspired and supported me throughout my career.”
This honor highlights the strength of the research community at UC Santa Barbara and reflects the impact of collaborative materials research in addressing emerging technological challenges. We congratulate Director Read de Alaniz on this well-deserved recognition and look forward to continued advances enabled by his leadership and vision.
