Influence of multiple scattering events on the absolute structural determination of chiral small molecules utilizing electron diffraction

Project Description

Electron diffraction is a well-established technique for crystal structure determination of small molecules and proteins. Since electrons interact more strongly with matter than X-rays, multiple scattering events can occur leading to inaccuracies in the diffraction intensities. This project aims to understand the correlation between the accelerating voltage of the electron beam and the consequent multiple scattering effects observed on these compounds. We will stipulate a threshold for data quality in electron diffraction, understand radiation damage on the samples according to different accelerating voltages, and study the relationship between kinematic and dynamic scattering to obtain the absolute configuration of a crystal structure.
