Additive Manufacturing Project Scientist at UC Santa Barbara

Job #
JPF01869

The BioPACIFIC MIP will create and operate a state-of-the-art user facility dedicated to biomaterials discovery and development. Creating this research eco-system will require the integration of very broad, disparate communities from Engineering, Materials, Biology, and Chemistry that utilize different kinds of equipment. BioPACIFIC is seeking a motivated individual to establish a world-class resource for additive manufacturing using novel biomaterials and take a lead role in the development and application of these next-generation tools in advancing BioPACIFIC’s research mission and enabling a national user base to utilize these capabilities.

Reporting to the Executive Director at UCSB of the NSF BioPACIFIC MIP, and working closely with both the research and operations teams, the Additive Manufacturing Project Scientist will be responsible for specifying, ordering, and installing commercial additive manufacturing equipment for the BioPACIFIC MIP, as well as working with the BioPACIFIC research team to design and build new additive manufacturing equipment and modify existing equipment to accommodate newly developed resins. The Additive Manufacturing Project Scientist will also integrate these tools with relevant characterization equipment and data gathering platforms. This includes researching the state of the art in biomaterials printing in industry and academia, consulting with faculty on the required features for the equipment, working with the building manager to ensure that the facilities requirements for the equipment are in place, and independently designing experiments to vet and qualify the equipment capabilities. The latter item requires scientific expertise in the field. UCSB is an AA/EOE, including disability/vets.
